With Saturday's 42-7 win over South Bend Washington in the Class 4A championship game, Indianapolis Cathedral has now won two straight state titles; four in six; and nine overall.

The Irish defense came-up big with five takeaways and five quarterback sacks.  They also kept record-setting receiver Gehrig Dieter "in-check", allowing five catches for 168 yards and a touchdown.  However, the 168 yards set a new championship game record.

Bishop Luers Gets Three-Peat

by Jeff Fisher
Indiana High School Football Huddle

For the second straight championship game, a team has gotten a three-peat.

Fort Wayne Bishop Luers matched Lafayette Central Catholic's three straight titles with a 41-17 win over Evansville Mater Dei in the Class 2A championship.  The title was the 10th for the Knights, which ties them for the most in state history with Bishop Chatard, which plays Saturday in the 3A title game.

Luers head coach Matt Lindsay has been around for nine of the titles, which ties him with Sheridan's Larry "Bud" Wright for the most for a coach.

The Knights dominated behind quarterback James Knapke, who completed 17-of-25 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns.  Jaylon Smith rushed for 130 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Bishop Luers' offense averaged 7.7 yards per play.

Indiana High School Playoff Pairings Announced

by Jeff Fisher
Indiana High School Football Huddle

There's still a week to go in the regular season, but the Indiana High School Athletic Association has released the pairings for the first round of sections to be played in two weeks.

There are several streaks on-the-line entering the 2011 postseason.

Bishop Luers and Lafayette Central Catholic both bring 12-game postseason win streaks into this year's tournament, that once again is being sponsored by the NFL's Indianapolis Colts.  Both schools will be going for the three-peat this year.

Both schools are quite a way away from the all-time record of 26 straight postseason wins that was accomplished by Warren Central from 2003 to 2007.

Bishop Luers, with nine overall state titles, is the two-time Class 2A champ.  Lafayette Central Catholic has won back-to-back 1A crowns.

Bishop Chatard is also on a streak, the defending 3A champs have won 10 straight sectional titles.  Another title this year would move the Indianapolis school within eight titles of the all-time record of 19 straight section crowns, which is held by Hobart from 1979 to 1997.

Gehrig Dieter Sets National Receiving Record

by Jeff Fisher
Indiana High School Football Huddle

South Bend Washington receiver Gehrig Dieter has a season's worth of statistics in just three games, plus a national record.

Friday night, Dieter caught 12 passes for 437 yards to break the national record for receiving yards in a game.  The old record was 421 yards by J.D. Felice of Rose Bud, Arkansas.

It's the second time that Dieter has broken a record this year.  In the season opener, he had 373 yards that set a new Indiana mark, which he broke again last night.  In the second game of the season, the Panther senior hauled-in 346 yards.

So, through three games, Dieter has 1,156 yards receiving.  He's almost halfway to the all-time national season record of 2,427 yards set by Cody Cardwell of Stephenville High School in Texas in 1998.

And, by the way, Washington improved to 3-0 with a 63-10 win over Elkhart Central.
