One of the most interesting first-round match-ups features defending 5A champ Carmel facing Warren Central.  This version of the Warriors had a sub-.500 regular season at 4-5, but those five loses were only be a combined margin of 20 points. Included in those five was a 10-7 loss to Carmel on September 29th.

Warren Central's 2012 loses:

9/8 Ben Davis 6-3
9/22 North Vigo 14-10
9/29 Carmel 10-7
10/12 Center Grove 8-5

Indianapolis Bishop Chartard will be seeking its 12th state title. Chatard has one the most all-time Indiana state titles, followed closely by Bishop Wayne Fort Luers, which has won 10.  Luers will be seeking a fourth straight title in 3A, as will Lafayette Central Catholic in 1A.  Carmel going for back-to-back 5A titles, Indianapolis Cathedral is seeking its third straight 4A title/

IHSAA Adds 6th Classification in High School Football

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

It's official, Indiana will crown six high school football champs beginning with the 2013 season.

The Indiana High School Athletic Association voted 13-5 today in favor of a portion of a proposal by the Indiana Football Coaches Association to expand the playoffs from five to six classifications.  The IHSAA also tweaked the IFCA's proposal for a four-year "tradition factor" that would require a school move-up one class based on tournament performance.  Instead, the IHSAA Executive Committee approved a two-year tournament success factor that will award points by which any school would move-up a class.

According to a  news release on the IHSAA website, schools will earn one point for a sectional championship, two points for a regional championship, three points for a semi-state title and four points for a state title.  Should a school earn six points or more during a specified two-year period – for instance two state championship game appearances – that school would compete in the next higher enrollment class for the ensuing two seasons.

The sixth classification will be created by splitting the current 5A classification in two with the largest 32 schools by enrollment making-up Class 6A.  Schools 33-64 will remain in Class 5A.

“I am extremely encouraged by the vision and valor of our Executive Committee in making these progressive decisions on behalf of student-athletes in the Hoosier state,” said Bobby Cox, IHSAA Commissioner. “It is my belief that these changes significantly address competition issues in football and will prove to enhance the team sport experience across all other disciplines.”

Indiana High School Playoff Pairings Announced

by Jeff Fisher
Indiana High School Football Huddle

There's still a week to go in the regular season, but the Indiana High School Athletic Association has released the pairings for the first round of sections to be played in two weeks.

There are several streaks on-the-line entering the 2011 postseason.

Bishop Luers and Lafayette Central Catholic both bring 12-game postseason win streaks into this year's tournament, that once again is being sponsored by the NFL's Indianapolis Colts.  Both schools will be going for the three-peat this year.

Both schools are quite a way away from the all-time record of 26 straight postseason wins that was accomplished by Warren Central from 2003 to 2007.

Bishop Luers, with nine overall state titles, is the two-time Class 2A champ.  Lafayette Central Catholic has won back-to-back 1A crowns.

Bishop Chatard is also on a streak, the defending 3A champs have won 10 straight sectional titles.  Another title this year would move the Indianapolis school within eight titles of the all-time record of 19 straight section crowns, which is held by Hobart from 1979 to 1997.

Indiana High School Football Scores - 2nd Round Playoffs

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

There was no doubt that getting out of Class 2A's Section 29 was going to be tough this year.

With defending 1A champ Cardinal Ritter moving into the section with '08 2A champ Heritage Christian, everyone was looking forward to a sectional championship game between the two. However, things didn't work out that way after Heritage Christian lost three regular season games and was seeded #7.

Instead the two met Friday night with top-seeded Cardinal Ritter advancing to the sectional final with a hard fought 6-0 victory. The Indy Star reports that this battle came down to the fourth quarter.

Ritter (10-1) will played Speedway (6-5) next week for the sectional championship.
